You can spot the Minoan town of Gournia as you travel south east of Aghios Nikolaos northern coast of Crete A fantastic example of Minoan ruins that was excavated by an American archaeologist between 1901 – 1904. An entire ancient town was discovered at what we now call Gournia Even though the original name of this Minoan town is unknown. Gournia has been dated to around the middle-late Minoan period of 1700-1400 BC or how about an archaeological digs site of great importance just a short hop over the Greek border! These two very interesting signs pointing to Archaeological Sites were situated opposite each other along the mountain roads of Crete. Excitedly we decided that we would follow the sign that pointed to the archaeological site that was 3 kilometres along the track! We followed the signs as they led us down a very rough track through the olive groves. Further signs along the way confimed we were indeed on the right track this track finally ended up in an olive grove with no further to go. We got out of the car and carried on, on foot. Alas it was a wild goose chase! We never did find these archaeological sites and returned to the main track quite disappointed. This event...
