Years ago, I heard of one wedding guest accidentally killed by a rogue bullet as the wedding festivities were in full swing!

Gunshot into road signs is a popular pastime in Greece

A lot of locals own a gun in Greece

There are of course gun licenses available and you can always hear gunshot at any Greek wedding as part of the ceremony

Greek guns Gournia Crete Greece Greek islands buckshot signs

These Greek signs show the various sizes of buckshot and gun fire size of the holes these dangerous weapons create

This sign showing the way to Tylisos has huge gaping gun shot wounds, which totally pierced the armour of the metal sign!

This European Funding site sign has been shot at

I wonder why!

ANOYIA

There is a mountain village in Crete called Anoyia

Anoyia is famous for being the only Greek village on Crete who withstood the invasion in the second world war of the Germans.

The men of Anoyia held the village safe and today there is a commemorative statue celebrating the bravery of the men of Anoyia

Anoyia stronghold in second world war shot sign

The Anoyian men also wear a very distinctive dress, with high legged leather boots, trousers tucked into their boots and the Anoyians are still a feared and very respective group of villagers on Crete.

You maybe able to just make out the preferred dress of the Men of Anoyia in this photo right, showing the Anoyian man with his gun.

Some of the gun shots go straight throo the signs, while other buckshot just dents the metal signs, howevers, I wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end of one of these guns!

Please note, there are many spellings of the Greek Cretan village of Anoyia, Anogia, Anogeia, if you wonder how it is pronounced, you may try ‘Anoy ya’, howevers try not to annoy these local villages

There were no signs pointing to this wildlife lake, which is split into two main lakes and on getting closer to the lakes, you will be able to spot this huge natural lake from the road leading down to it.

The lake is huge as you can see from these photos!

Plus I have given a link below to more photos of this lake in Irapetra.

You can spot the Minoan town of Gournia as you travel south east of Aghios Nikolaos northern coast of Crete

Ancient Minoan Gornia Crete Greek archaeological dig site

A fantastic example of Minoan ruins that was excavated by an American archaeologist between 1901 – 1904.

An entire ancient town was discovered at what we now call Gournia

Ancient Minoan Gornia Crete Greek archaeological dig site as seen from the road

Even though the original name of this Minoan town is unknown.

Gournia has been dated to around the middle-late Minoan period of 1700-1400 BC

or how about an archaeological digs site of great importance just a short hop over the Greek border!

Ancient Minoan Gornia Crete Greek archaeological dig site

Above the fantastic archaeological find of Gournia the abandoned Minoan Vilage near Agios Nikolaos north east Crete where it can be clearly seen from the road.

Although on our travels through the Greek villages there were many signposts pointing to Minoan Villas and archaeological sites, most sites hadn’t been constructed yet or were just non existent.

Ancient Minoan Gornia Crete Greek archaeological dig site

We were travelling along a road and had to reverse our car back up the road as we almost missed this fantastic Minoan Villa!

Situated in Sklavokambos it was small but very well preserved!

… and of course it had it’s obligatory shot sign! See other shot signs here!

These two very interesting signs pointing to Archaeological Sites were situated opposite each other along the mountain roads of Crete.

Excitedly we decided that we would follow the sign that pointed to the archaeological site that was 3 kilometres along the track!

Greek archaeological dig sites Crete Greece

We followed the signs as they led us down a very rough track through the olive groves.

Further signs along the way confimed we were indeed on the right track this track finally ended up in an olive grove with no further to go.

We got out of the car and carried on, on foot.

Alas it was a wild goose chase! We never did find these archaeological sites and returned to the main track quite disappointed.

This event was not a ‘one off’ – many new signs pointing to archaeological sites and other places of interest led to a dead end! Perhaps the archaeological sites themselves hadn’t yet been built?!

Greek archaeological dig sites Crete Greece Minoan villa

Strange archaeological sites signs off the beaten track Crete it was find the archaeological sites as these misleading signs along the roads of Crete pointed to disappointment!

Greek archaeological dig sites Crete Greece Minoan villa

We had travelled along off the beaten track in the direction the signs pointed to, but even after many kilometres travelled, we still didn’t find any archaeological site.

Greek archaeological dig sites Crete Greece Minoan villa

Instead we found this Minoan Villa, it was well worth our wild goose chase!

Plus this sign for a Minoan Villa of Sklavokambos or Sklavokampos with its Minoan foundations of the long gone ancient village.

If you wish to visit an archaeological site and DONT wish to be disappointed, either visit the very busy huge and beautiful Knossos near Iraklion northern Crete or how about this archaeological digs site of great importance just a short hop over the Greek border!

inKretable Crete!
